One of the things I learned in my early Internet Marketing career was to do things my own way.
Be different. You really need to develop your own individual style, your own “Brand.” This is equally important when it comes to building your email list.
Look at it from the point of view of your prospects. They receive dozens of emails from other marketers every week. Why should they even open your mails, let alone BUY from you?
I mean let’s be honest. You spent time creating a great looking squeeze page for your prospects to opt in, right?
You did a grand job on making your compelling offer (free gift), a real doozy (is that a real word?). Then you go and BLOW it all on your emails.
The first step is to get them opened.
In order to do this, you need a compelling headline. At this stage, unless your prospects love you so much that they will open every one of you emails regardless..
The Headline has to SELL the email..
Think of it as the headline to a very expensive magazine ad. You wouldn’t pay all that money, only to have them ignore the headline would you?. Keep them guessing.
Give them a compelling reason to open your email. Try Curiosity?
The 3 Things Your Spouse Will NEVER Tell You?
Is that compelling enough?. did it peak your curiosity?.
I think you see what I mean. Try Curiosity & Teasing…
100% Confident! I had a high open rate with this one. It’s short, it will make you curious and it’s teasing you to ask yourself “What is it?”
So, spend time perfecting your amazing headlines. Other ideas that work are things like “lists”.. people love lists..
7 Things You Never Knew About Honey!.. etc, etc..
And now, on to the body of your emails.
Are You Boring The Pants Off Your Email List Prospects?
Yes, you committed email SIN.. Your emails SUCK… your emails should never be opened whilst driving because they were so boring. Is this you?
OK, enough already. Here’s how to get people to open those emails and look forward to your regular email masterpieces clunking into their email inbox.
Create content people want to read. Not just content you think they want, just because you like it.
Think about this for a moment. When people see that your emails are all about them, they will like your content. when they like your content, some will like you. Once they like you and get to know you, they will buy from you.
By continuously giving them links to offers all the time, you are like the door to door salesman. By giving them compelling content each time you are like the uncle who loves telling stories and people love to listen to.
In order for your prospects to want to stay with you for the ride; in order for them to whip out their wallet and buy your amazing products in the future, you have to make it worth their while.
What’s In It For Me ? – Love your Email List
YES! Entertain them and give them some good old fashioned quality content..Don’t just give them emails containing links to “The next best thing”…
Inject some humour into your emails. If you are not of the humorous persuasion then use someone else’s humour. Include the odd joke, tell a funny story. You know the one about the time you nearly went broke and you were so poor you thought you might have to sell the dog… Well, be humorous but also be truthful.
Make people WANT to belong to your email list for life. Entertain them, give them value, then tell them about your wonderful products
Have a great day.
Keith

The email list I once had made me become greedy, and toward the end I only used it o send out promotional material. That was the main reason why I cancelled my Aweber account. Well that and the fact that I was boring the hell out of the few people that did still open my emails at the end!
Anyone can have the power of an autoresponder, but as you say using it wisely is quite another thing altogether.
I am much better behaved now, but it will be some time before I ever sign up with Aweber again (who I believe are probably still the best service to use for anyone looking for an autoresponder!)
I love Aweber. Thanks for your comments Paul.
